Life Through A Lens

Week 3 - Shutter Speed

This weeks activity was all about shutter speed. This post is divided into 3 sections. The first section covers a set of photos with deferring shutter speeds of 1/2000, 1/1000, 1/500, 1/250, 1/125, 1/60, 1/30, 1/15, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 1”, 2”. The photos are of (Jess - student) walking at the same pace back and forth across the frame. The following photos were taken in shutter-priority-mode with the different shutter speeds to show the difference between slower shutter speeds and higher shutter speeds. It was interesting to observe the camera change all the other settings to compensate for the correct exposer. Photos that were taken slower than 1/8 of a second were left overexposed.

In the following section I experimented with panning. Panning involves shooting at slower shutter speeds to capture a moving object in focus whilst rendering everything else in the frame blurred. This is achieved trial and error; by moving the camera with the moving object to sync the speed of the object with the shutter speed. In shooting a large number of photos, I was able to capture five photos with pleasant results.

The following photos are from a studio setting, experimenting with long exposers and light painting.
